The Toronto Blue Jays have made their second trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in the last three days shipping right-handed starter Shaun Marcum to the Brew Crew.
Details on what Toronto is to receive in the trade is not yet confirmed, but Canadian second baseman Brett Lawrie looks to factor into the deal in some way shape or form according to multiple sources.
Marcum returned to the Blue Jays starting rotation last season after missing 2009 with Tommy John surgery and pitched to a very successful 13-8 record with an earned run average of 3.64 in 31 games started.
The 28-year old Marcum was a workhorse for the Jays pitching 195.1 innings and was a definite fan favourite as well as shutdown stopper for the Jays as he pitched exceptionally well for the squad after a team loss.
The native of Kansas City, Missouri was drafted by the Jays in the third round of the 2003 entry draft and has pitched five seasons in Major League Baseball, all with the Jays. He has compiled career numbers of 37-25 with an ERA of 3.85 in 120 games pitched, 95 of which were starts.
Marcum is a control artist with an outstanding change-up who rarely walks his opposition (43BB in 195.1IP in 2010).
If Lawrie is in fact the main or only piece coming back to Toronto in the deal the Jays are certainly making the deal for a gain down the road as Lawrie is not Major League ready as of yet.
Lawrie is a 20-year old native of Langley, British Columbia and was drafted in the first round, 16th overall by the Brewers in 2008 entry draft.
The 213lbs second baseman was rated the 59th best prospect in baseball in 2010 by Baseball America and hit .289 with 8HR & 63RBI with 36 doubles, 16 triples, 30 stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .346 in 135 games played for Milwaukee’s Double A affiliate Hunstville Stars.
**UPDATE** The trade is official and it is Marcum for Lawrie straight up.
