The Toronto Blue Jays and the faithful fans of the city are watching some of the team roster from 2010 disappear before their very eyes.
Over just a week after the team dealt 2010 opening day starter Shaun Marcum to the Milwaukee Brewers for Canadian prospect Brett Lawrie the team lost two more familiar faces, as last season’s starting first baseman Lyle Overbay signed a contract today with the Pittsburgh Pirates, while one-time closer Jeremy Accardo came to an agreement with the Baltimore Orioles.
Overbay and the Pirates have agreed to a one-year deal which will pay the 33-year old $5 million.
The lefty played 154 games for the Blue Jays last season hitting for a batting average of .243 while adding 20HR & 67RBI while playing an under-rated first base defensively.
Overbay has plenty of pop into the outfield gaps and has proven that point throughout his career recording 287 doubles in ten Major League seasons.
His swing seems to fit PNC Park well and his defense will surely improve the Pirates overall as they relied on Garrett Jones last season and surely the team would like to see Jones in the outfield.
In his career, the patient-hitting Overbay, an eighteenth round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 1999 entry draft has fashioned a decent MLB career for himself hitting for a career average of .274 with 122HR & 524RBI while getting on-base at a .358 clip.
The Blue Jays were certainly not going to re-visit the Jeremy Accardo saga in Toronto and that scenario was proven correct today when the reliever agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Orioles for $1.08 million.
Accardo, who was a human yo-yo for the Jays in his career moved between the team’s Major League roster and Triple A affiliate pitching only five games for the Jays last season.
The hard-throwing right-hander had his best season in 2007 filling in for the injured B.J. Ryan as Toronto’s closer saving thirty games with a record of 4-4 and an earned run average of 2.14 in 64 appearances.
Accardo only managed to pitch 42.5 innings for the ball club between the end of that season and the end of the 2010 season, while falling out of favours with the club, which included arguments with former manager Cito Gaston and even made a statement to the media last season about the Blue Jays and his situation with the club, which was frowned upon by the franchise.

Jeremy Accardo's days in Toronto are done, but maybe a fresh start in Baltimore is just what he needs.
A fresh start is definitely something that was needed by Accardo as he looks to turn his career around and Baltimore has offered him that chance.
He will join a bullpen that could also see the acquisition of another Blue Jay free-agent as the Orioles are also reportedly interested in acquiring last season’s closer Kevin Gregg.
The Orioles have an offer similar to Mike Gonzalez’s two-year, $12 million deal from last season on the table for Gregg, who saved 37 games for Toronto last season.
