The Toronto Blue Jays overhaul of their team’s bullpen may continue to take place this off-season as they look to be close to a deal with free-agent right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel.
The Jays have already seen the likes of Scott Downs, Brian Tallet & Jeremy Accardo depart this off-season while it does not look like last season’s closer Kevin Gregg will be returning either.
The team seems to have the goal of going with a much younger bullpen which will be assisted by veterans such as Shawn Camp & Jason Frasor. That bullpen may have just come to an agreement with what would be its elder statesman if the 37-year old Dotel joins the squad.
The two parties have reportedly agreed to a one-year contract worth $3.5 million, although nothing is official as of yet.
Dotel split last season between the Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers & Colorado Rockies where he earned a record of 3-4 with an earned run average of 4.08 with 22 saves in 64 innings pitched, allowing 52 hits, walking 32 batters to go along with 75 strikeouts.
The veteran of 12 Major League seasons has a ton of relief experience and is a notorious journeyman reliever playing for numerous teams such as the New York Mets, Houston Astros, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers & Rockies.
The 6’0, 220lbs native of the Dominican Republic has recorded 105 career saves in 834.1IP. He has allowed only 669 hits amongst those appearances, while walking 379 and striking out 1015.
Dotel has always been known as a late inning pitcher whether it be as a closer, set-up man or seventh inning reliever so if he does not leave Spring Training as Toronto’s closer he will certainly be an asset in late game situations for the Blue Jays bullpen.
