The Toronto Blue Jays opened up a three game series with the visiting New York Yankees tonight at the Rogers Centre in Toronto as the two American League East division rivals looked to conquer their opponent.
Brandon Morrow, who only lasted four innings and had diminished velocity in his last start against the Oakland Athletics took the mound for Toronto on his regular rest to square off against Ivan Nova, who was making his first start of the season for the Yankees.
Morrow pitched exceptionally well for Toronto against a Yankees squad who was missing third baseman Alex Rodriguez & shortstop Derek Jeter from the starting line-up, lasting six innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out twelve and walking two.
The contest featured some hot moments beginning at the conclusion of the fifth inning when Toronto shortstop Yunel Escobar was ejected for exchanging some choice words with home plate umpire Jerry Meals. Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston raced out to the field and had some words of his own which in turn got him ejected from the game as well.
The fun was not over after those incidents.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Nova threw high and tight inside to Jays right-fielder Jose Bautista, who had already hit a two run home run in the contest, which prompted Bautista to walk towards the mound, thus clearing the benches and bullpens. The clearing did not lead to any kind of violence whatsoever, but the tempers certainly flared, which garnered some crude comments and crowd reactions from the fans in attendance.
The Yankees, who had scored an early first inning run on a Robinson Cano RBI double, would tie the game at two runs a piece in the top of the sixth inning.
The game would stay tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when Bautista would get his revenge against the Yankees for the chin music from earlier smashing his second home run of the game off reliever David Robertson, his 40th dinger of the 2010 season, which in turn pushed his RBI total to 92.
Kevin Gregg would pitch a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 28th save of the season s Toronto’s would win the series opener 3-2.
Scott Downs, who pitched eighth inning would earn the victory moving his record to 5-5, while Robertson took the loss as his record fell to 2-4.
Before Escobar was ejected he was two for three in the contest with a double, while Bautista did most of the damage for Toronto on the evening, going two for three with two home runs, three RBI’s and a walk.
Ramiro Pena, who manned the hot corner for New York tonight in Rodriguez’s absence had a two-hit game for the Yankees, while Cano was on-base three times on the night with a double and two walks.
The night was certainly full of action, which should hopefully carry over into the next two games of the series, which continues tomorrow night at the Rogers Centre at 7:07pm EST with Marc Rzepczynski (1-1, 4.76ERA) taking the mound for Toronto while Dustin Moseley (3-2, 4.76ERA) pitches for the Yankees.
