The Toronto Blue Jays continued their three game home series with the Minnesota Twins last night at the Rogers Centre.
One night after losing a close ball game to the visiting Twins the Jays were going to have to rely on the young left-handed arm of the returning Marc Rzepczynski, who made his first appearance for the Jays of the season.
Rzepczynski looked comfortable pitching against one of the top offenses in the American League in the Twins as he lasted five and two thirds innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out seven in a 6-5 Jays victory. Despite an admirable performance Rzepczynski walked away with a no decision in the contest.
Similar to game one of the series the two teams fought back and forth exchanging leads in an exciting offensive ballgame which featured an inside the park home run from Jose Bautista, his 22nd home run of the year and triples from both Fred Lewis and Orlando Hudson. Hudson also homered against his former team in a three for four performance, while Delmon Young continued his hot hitting in the series smashing a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning.
Every hitter in the Jays line-up recorded a hit, with Alex Gonzalez hitting his sixteenth home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the first. Gonzalez also recorded another RBI on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The game winning hit came off the bat of the returning Vernon Wells, who was getting over flu like symptoms. Wells doubled in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Bautista.
Relievers Scott Downs (1.1IP, 1H) & Kevin Gregg (1IP, 0H) would shutdown the Twins offense late in the game to secure the Toronto victory. Gregg recorded his nineteenth save of the season.
Shawn Camp also appeared out of the Blue Jays bullpen, pitching one inning, allowing one earned run on two hits.
The Jays offense seemed to gel as a whole for the first time in a long time, as the offense spread out their ten hits amongst all participating players and used their strengths to take a tough fought victory over the Twins.
The Jays will close out their three game series with the Twins tonight as they send lefty Brett Cecil (7-5, 4.19ERA) to the mound to pitch against Scott Baker (7-7, 4.72ERA).
The game is scheduled to begin at 7:07pm EST.
In other Jays news it is very likely that regular second baseman Aaron Hill will return to the Blue Jays lineup tonight in the finale of the Twins series.
Hill, similar to Wells was also fighting a flu bug losing eight pounds in the process and has been out of action since last weekend’s series in New York.
Also, with the international player signing period opening at the beginning of the month the Jays look to have dove into the market place yet again. The Jays have reportedly signed Venezuelan right hander Adonis Cardona for a reported $2.8 million, although the team has not officially released any such statement.
I reported back in May that the team was interested in the 17-year old righty.
