Gear Up For Blue Jays Baseball

Morrow Impressive in Jays Win

The Toronto Blue Jays completed their three game interleague home series last night against the St. Louis Cardinals at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

With the Jays losing the first two games of the series they put their hope for at least one win in the right arm of starting pitcher Brandon Morrow as he squared off against one of the National League’s best pitchers in the Cardinals Adam Wainwright.

Morrow has been impressive of late after pairing up with catcher Jose Molina on a consistent basis and last night was no different.

Morrow shutdown the Cardinals offense; pitching eight innings, allowing zero earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out eight in a 5-0 Blue Jays victory.

The young pitcher seems to have some kind of connection with Molina as the two work very well together. Morrow has gotten away from throwing the high nineties fastball every time he throws and is relying on using all of his pitches more often.

His two seam fastball has been his best weapon in this repertoire in my opinion and it showed in last night’s contest, as Morrow sank the ball to the corners, while still blowing by batters with a 91-94mph fastball and fooling hitters with a nasty curveball.

Morrow’s confidence was obviously high as his teammates jumped out to a early lead of 5-0 after just three innings as Vernon Wells went deep twice, one being a two run shot and Adam Lind went deep once.

Prior to the game manager Cito Gaston switched up his batting order replacing Aaron Hill in the number two spot with Alex Gonzalez, moving Hill to the six spot, while Lind moved from the three spot to the five spot with Jose Bautista hitting third.

The move seemed to work for the team as they scored runs at ease early on against a tough pitcher in Wainwright.

Wells ended up being the offensive star of the night with his two home runs, going two for three with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Lind was two for four with a solo home run; one run batted in and a run scored and Jose Molina added some offense to go along with his beautifully called game going two for four with a double out of the number nine slot in the order.

Shawn Camp pitched one inning out of the Toronto bullpen following Morrow’s eight innings and allowed no one to reach base, striking out one. Camp has easily been the most effective weapon for Toronto out of its bullpen throughout all of this season.

The game also featured an awful moment in the bottom of the eighth inning when home plate umpire Tony Randazzo was hit in the upper chest area with a 96mph fastball from a dialed up Morrow. Morrow crossed up catcher Molina and the fastball whizzed over Molina’s left shoulder into the umpire, who immediately hit the ground. After a few scary moments Randazzo signaled he was okay and fans, as well as Morrow, could breathe a sigh of relief.

The crowd for the game was an awful 12,392, which is very small to witness a popular team such as the Cardinals play, as they feature the best player in baseball Albert Pujols and other stars such as Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina, Chris Carpenter and future Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa. The low attendance is due to the G20 summit closing off most of Toronto’s downtown core for security purposes.

With the win the Jays move to 39-34, six and a half games out of first place in the American League East.

The Jays travel to Philadelphia tonight to play an oddball series with the Phillies. Due to security issues surrounding the G20 summit yet again, the Jays originally scheduled home series with Philadelphia has been moved to the opposition’s park. The game will be played under American League rules with the Jays batting as the home team.

Toronto fans were disappointed with the move, because tonight’s contest features former Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay (8-6, 2.43ERA) pitching against his old team who will send Jesse Litsch (0-1, 6.75ERA) to the mound.

The game and series would have been a huge revenue draw for the team, as well as spike some interest in Toronto baseball for a team that is currently suffering with the fourth lowest attendance numbers in baseball. Baseball fans, as well as most habitants of Toronto, are very upset with the G20 summit and its obvious waste of time and money it has burdened the city with.

The game tonight will surely be watched by many in the Toronto area, but the physical act of having Halladay return to Toronto would have been an incredible experience. Leave it up to politics to ruin a glorious moment yet again.

The game is scheduled for a 7:05pm EST start time.
