The Toronto Blue Jays continued their four game road series with the Cleveland Indians last night at Progressive Field.

Monday night the Jays lackluster offense cost them a win, despite a fine pitching performance from Ricky Romero and the team hoped the same would not occur with right hander Brandon Morrow on the hill.

Morrow, who has been pitching extremely well for the Jays since having Jose Molina penciled in as his personal catcher got off to a rough start against the Indians, which combined with a costly early inning error from John McDonald gave the Indians an early advantage which they used to hold off a surging Jays team that made a late game push for the victory. The Jays fell short, losing the contest 5-4.

Morrow lasted six innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking two and striking out eight.

Morrow was matched up against the Indians Fausto Carmona, a sinker baller who is a former nineteen game winner. Carmona was fooling the Jays hitters early, but was eventually figured out. Carmona pitched six and a third innings, allowing four runs, three earned on six hits, walking three and striking out two. Carmona had his good sinker and sweeping slider working early, but the Jays managed to figure out the pitcher in the sixth inning. Carmona departed in just enough time to earn himself his seventh victory of the season.

The Indians scored most of their runs early as they went up by three, but it would be a Matt LaPorta deep centre field solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that would be the difference in the Indians win.

The Jays scored four runs throughout the sixth and seventh innings, but were held off at the pass by the Indians Rafael Perez & closer Kerry Wood in the eighth and ninth as Perez earned his third hold of the season while Wood earned his eighth save of the season.

Offensively the Jays came up short, but they received a two for five night from lead-off man Fred Lewis who also scored a run and a two RBI night from Adam Lind who singled in both runs in the top of the sixth. Lyle Overbay was also on base two times in the contest both via the walk, while also scoring a run.

David Purcey (1IP, 1K) & Jason Frasor (1IP, 2K) both were impressive out of the Blue Jays bullpen despite Toronto’s loss.

The Jays have now lost three straight ball games, two of which have been to the lowly Indians squad. The team record now falls to 40-38 and is getting dangerously close to returning to .500, a mark the team has not seen in quite some time.

The Jays will continue their four game set tonight in Cleveland as they pit Jesse Litsch (0-2, 8.78ERA) up against the Indians Aaron Laffey (0-2, 6.37ERA).

The game is scheduled for a 7:05pm EST start time.
