The Toronto Blue Jays opened up a four game road series with the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field last night.
The team sent lefty Ricky Romero to the mound to battle Indians veteran sinkerballer Jake Westbrook.
Romero pitched a fabulous game, lasting seven innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out two, but similar to his last start the Jays did not provide him with enough run support to earn a victory, taking the loss in a 2-1 Indians victory.
Romero was done in by a surprise suicide squeeze play in the bottom of the sixth inning.
With the game tied at one and both offenses struggling, the Indians went small ball with Jayson Nix at the plate, as he dropped the bunt with the burly Travis Hafner racing down the third base line. Romero attempted to field the ball with his glove and flick it to catcher John Buck, but was unsuccessful.
The suicide squeeze play would score the go-ahead run and would be enough for the Indians victory which was backed by an outstanding pitching performance from Westbrook, who pitched six solid innings, allowing one earned run on six hits, walking one and striking out four.
The Jays offense was stifled by the veteran’s sinking pitches as well as spot on slider. Even after Westbrook exited the game the Jays could not score against the Indians bullpen combination of Joe Smith, Rafael Perez, Chris Perez & Kerry Wood, who notched his seventh save of the season.
The Jays only run in the ball game came courtesy of a Jose Bautista double in the top of the first inning, which scored Alex Gonzalez, who had doubled one batter prior.
Bautista, Vernon Wells & Lyle Overbay all had two hits a piece as the Jays recorded eight hits in total throughout the contest.
The Toronto bullpen saw the familiar faces of Scott Downs & Shawn Camp as both players made appearances. Downs only pitched to Hafner, allowing a single before Camp took over pitching a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Losing a tough one like this to a rebuilding Indians team, who came into the game with a record of 27-47, is not what the Jays need to happen as they try to stay in the American League East race. With the loss the team falls to 40-37, eight games behind the division leading New York Yankees and five games behind the third place Tampa Bay Rays.
The Jays look to turn it all around as the series with the Indians continues tonight with a 7:05pm EST start time.
The Jays will send Brandon Morrow (5-5, 4.50ERA) to the mound to pitch against former nineteen game winner Fausto Carmona (6-6, 3.64ERA).
In other Jays news, some rumours around the baseball world have popped up regarding the manager’s position in Toronto which will be vacated by Cito Gaston at the end of this season.
The first rumour to arise came courtesy of Anthony Castrovince, the Indians writer for MLB.com. Castrovince hears that former Blue Jays catcher Sal Fasano, who is currently managing in Toronto’s farm system is an early candidate for the position.
The 38-year old Fasano was an eleven year Major Leaguer who had stops with the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians & the Jays.
He was a career .221 hitter with 47HR & 140RBI in 1109 Major League at-bats.
