The Toronto Blue Jays completed their three game home series against the Baltimore Orioles yesterday afternoon defeating the O’s by a score of 6-1.

The victory signaled a sweep of the Jays division rival as Toronto used a pitching trio of Shaun Marcum, Brett Cecil & Ricky Romero to earn the three wins.

On Friday evening, Shaun Marcum once again showed why he is Toronto’s stopper by winning a decision after a Jays loss, pitching six strong innings of work, allowing zero earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out seven in a 5-0 Jays win.

The impressive performance by Marcum earned him his fifth win of the season as his season earned run average lowered to 2.59.

The Jays received home runs from Aaron Hill, his seventh & Vernon Wells, his twelfth while Fred Lewis had a two hit performance with a stolen base in his return to Toronto’s lineup.

Jose Bautista tripled in the game and actually scored on the play due to a throwing error.

On Saturday afternoon the Jays starting pitching dominance over the Orioles continued as lefty Brett Cecil took the hill for Toronto. Cecil was back to using his prescription sport glasses and the improved vision had a positive affect as Cecil earned his fifth victory of the season, pitching eight innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, walking none and striking out seven in one of his finest performances of 2010, as the Jays defeated the O’s 5-2.

Cecil got help form his teammates in the bottom of the eight inning when they scored three runs to secure Cecil the victory as a gleaming smile was broadcast across the face of the youngster when the runs plated.

Lyle Overbay broke out of a slump in a big way, hitting two home runs for three runs batted in on the day, while both Aaron Hill & Vernon Wells each homered again for Toronto.

Every hitter in the Jays starting lineup with the exception of Edwin Encarnacion recorded a hit as the Jays used a strong offense and starting pitching performance from Cecil to win their second straight game. Closer Kevin Gregg also earned his thirteenth save on the season.

On Sunday afternoon in the series finale the Jays would send lefty Ricky Romero to the mound. Romero disappointed in front of family and friends in his last outing against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in his home state of California and had something to prove. Romero was golden on the day pitching a complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits, walking two and striking out seven in a 6-1 Blue Jays win. With the seven strikeouts he moved into first place in the American League in strikeouts with 79 thus far.

Offensively, the Jays continued their torrid home run spree as Jose Bautista cranked his American League leading sixteenth while Alex Gonzalez added his eleventh in a three for four performance and Lyle Overbay homered again, his seventh.

With the barrage of home runs over the weekend the Jays surpassed a franchise record for home runs in one month with 53 with tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays still remaining.

It was an impressive weekend of all around baseball for the Jays as dominant pitching combined with powerful bats, a stellar bullpen and defense earned them three wins, pushing their record to 30-22, a game behind the New York Yankees and four and a half behind the Rays.

Speaking of the Rays they come into Toronto to do battle with the Jays at the Rogers Centre with the series beginning tonight at 7:07pm EST. The Jays will send power armed right hander Brandon Morrow (3-4, 6.66ERA) to face off against the Rays right hander Matt Garza (5-3, 2.97ERA).

Also, the Jays needed to find an extra starter to pitch in Tuesday’s contest against the Rays and had numerous options to choose from. The Jays decided on big left hander Brian Tallet, despite a recent poor performance in Triple A. Tallet, who is 1-1 with an ERA of 6.11 has been on the disabled list since April 18th with a left forearm strain.

I would also like to congratulate former Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay on his perfect game pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday against the Florida Marlins . Way to go Doc!
