The Toronto Blue Jays continued their West Coast road trip with game one of a three game series at Angels Stadium in Anaheim last night.
The Blue Jays sent the talented young left arm of Brett Cecil to the mound to square off against veteran Angels starter Joe Saunders.
Cecil showcased his talents in front of 35,826 disappointed Angels fans as the youngster dominated the home team pitching seven and a third innings, allowing no runs on two hits, walking two and striking out three.
It was the second consecutive game that Cecil has turned away from using his prescription sport glasses, as the change seems to have made a difference.
Despite having early problems locating his pitches Cecil managed to get through the Angels line-up with ease. Most of what Cecil threw in the opening innings was up in the strike zone, which is a dangerous route of action when facing a team with sluggers such as Torii Hunter, Hideki Matsui, Kendry Morales and Juan Rivera.
Cecil managed to find his groove as the game continued as he breezed towards his fourth victory of the 2010 season.
Cecil was given the run support he needed as the Jays offensive attack continued to produce scoring six runs on six hits.
Instead of using their regular approach of drilling long balls, the Jays took advantage of an Angels team who issued eight walks in the ball game, producing big hits with runners in scoring position.
Adam Lind had a great day at the plate against the Angels, which is becoming prototypical for the Jays designated hitter, going two for four with a double and two runs batted in, while Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay & John Buck all contributed with RBI’s as well.
Fred Lewis got the Jays off to a hot start in the first smacking his second triple of the season to lead off the game and Jose Bautista showcased his patience at the plate recording three walks.
The Jays scored two runs off of Saunders in the first and fourth innings, but used a big seventh inning, which featured sloppy defensive play and an abundance of walks from the Angels, to blow the game completely open on their way to a 6-0 victory.
The Jays received fine bullpen work yet again from Jason Frasor & Scott Downs as they combined to pitch an inning and two thirds, allowing one lone hit, striking out two.
With the win the Jays move to 27-20 on the season, a half game back of the wild card leading New York Yankees in the American League East and five and a half games back of the division leading Tampa Bay Rays.
The Jays hope to continue their victorious ways as they send the impressive Ricky Romero (4-1, 2.71ERA) to the mound to do battle with the Angels Ervin Santana (3-3, 3.75ERA).
The game will be a homecoming for Romero as the Los Angeles, California native makes his start against his home state of California. Romero attended the University of Cal State Fullerton.
The game is scheduled to begin at 10:05pm EST.
