The Toronto Blue Jays completed their three game series with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon in disappointing fashion.
The Jays took the loss 4-3, but still wound up with a series victory as they did win games one and two earlier in the week.
The starting pitching match-up was one of aces as Shaun Marcum hit the hill for the Jays battling defending Cy Young award winner Zack Greinke for the Royals.
Both pitchers made one big mistake, but pitched well over all with Marcum completing seven innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, walking one and striking out six.
Marcum’s big mistake came in the top of the first inning when he allowed a three run home run to Jose Guillen, otherwise Marcum was impressive throughout.
Greinke was more on-point than Marcum, pitching seven innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits, walking one and striking out eight. Greinke’s lone mistake came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alex Gonzalez smacked a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for a two run shot.
The Royals held onto their 3-2 lead throughout most of the ball game after the fourth inning as Marcum and Greinke battled pitch for pitch.
Greinke left the game after seven innings, allowing the Jays to use a combination of a Jose Molina single, a Mike McCoy pinch runner substitution, a sacrifice off the bat of John McDonald and an RBI single from Fred Lewis to tie the ball game up courtesy of Royals reliever Josh Rupe.
The Jays who have earned the title of “comeback kids” this season looked as if they were on their way to yet another come from behind victory.
The possible idea of victory was put to rest in the top of the tenth inning when the struggling Alex Gordan took Jays reliever Scott Downs deep to centre field for a go ahead solo home run.
The Royals dependable closer Joakim Soria would come into the game to shutdown the bottom half of the Jays line-up earning his fourth save of the season as the Royals would take the third game of the three game set.
On the offensive side of things the Jays only recorded four hits in the ball game, with the big hit coming off the bat of Alex Gonzalez.
The attendance numbers on the day, albeit still a disappointment, were up for the Jays as 15,577 enjoyed the afternoon contest where the hometown Jays sported their powder blue vintage uniforms of old.
The Jays have an off day today as they travel to Tampa to do battle with the red hot Rays at Tropicana Field on Friday.
Friday’s match-up will feature Rays fireballer Matt Garza against the recently called up Brett Cecil for Toronto. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:10pm EST.
Speaking of Cecil, the lefty was called up to replace Brian Tallet in the rotation with Tallet moving to the 15-day disabled list due to forearm soreness in his pitching arm.
Tallet was initially going to be pushed back a start, but the forearm soreness remained after playing catch on Wednesday. The Jays were cautious and decided to place Tallet on the disabled list as the season is still young.
Also heading to the 15-day disabled list is third baseman Edwin Encarnacion, who has missed seven straight games with a sore right shoulder.
With the expected return of All-Star second baseman Aaron Hill on Friday the Jays had to clear up a roster spot and with Encarnacion’s inability to play the choice was an obvious one.
Jose Bautista should continue to see the bulk of action at third base while Encarnacion recovers.
