The Toronto Blue Jays were victorious in the second game of a three game home set against the Kansas City Royals last night in Toronto at the Rogers Centre, winning by a score of 4-3.
Initially, the Jays were having problems with Royals starter Kyle Davies, who seemed to be cruising against the Jays allowing only two runs on two hits through six innings. The two runs were courtesy of an Adam Lind sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning scoring Fred Lewis and a Vernon Wells solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Jays managed to get to Davies in the bottom of the seventh inning when Wells led off the inning with a double, which was followed by a Lyle Overbay double, a Jose Bautista infield single scoring Wells and a John Buck infield single scoring Overbay to grab the lead.
The hit fest in the seventh chased Davies from the game as Toronto was glad to see him go.
Dana Eveland got the starting nod for the Jays and managed to keep the squad in the game, despite struggling at times. Eveland lasted just five and s third, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits, walking two and striking out three. Eveland got himself into a lot of deep counts which pushed his pitch total to a high number causing his early exit from the ball game.
Despite Eveland’s struggles the Jays stuck around and used the seventh inning to their advantage.
Once the Jays gained the lead in the seventh their solid bullpen took over as Shawn Camp & Jason Frasor each pitched scoreless innings, leaving the ninth inning duty for closer Kevin Gregg.
Despite a couple of heart pounding moments in the ninth with two outs, one of which nearly saw a collision between second baseman Mike McCoy & right fielder Travis Snider (which allowed the Royals Willie Bloomquist to get aboard) & a wild pitch from Gregg, the Jays managed to close out the game for the come from behind victory.
Offensively, Vernon Wells was a one man wrecking crew for the Jays, going three for four with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.
The victory pushed the Jays record to 9-6 on the year as they look to keep pace with the New York Yankees & Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
As predicted the attendance at the game was terrible yet again with a mark of 10,565, the second lowest mark in franchise history.
The Jays look to sweep the three game set from the visiting Royals today @ 12:37pm EST as the battle of staff aces pits the Jays Shaun Marcum (0-1, 4.05ERA) against last season’s AL Cy Young award winner Zack Greinke (0-2, 3.57ERA).
In other Blue Jays news, regular third baseman Edwin Encarnacion missed his sixth straight game last night with a sore right shoulder and may have to be moved to the 15-day disabled list if things do not start to clear up.
The move is a likely one if Encarnacion cannot play as All-Star second baseman Aaron Hill is expected to be ready to come off the disabled list ready to play in Friday’s contest against the Tampa Bay Rays.
If Encarnacion recovers in time than expect to see one of either bench players Mike McCoy or Randy Ruiz demoted to Triple A Las Vegas to clear a roster spot for Hill.
