Jays Back on Track in Win Against Royals

The Toronto Blue Jays opened up a three game home series with the Kansas City Royals last night at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, as they looked to recoup from a three game sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Jays sent the struggling Brandon Morrow to the mound as he squared off against the Royals Brian Bannister.

Morrow finally showed why the Blue Jays traded for the former first round pick in the off-season pitching seven spectacular innings of work, allowing one earned run on three hits, walking two and striking out eight. Morrow had a no hitter until the top of the sixth inning before Royals shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt ended the possibility with a single to left.

Morrow was helped out on the offensive side of things with a fantastic day from Jose Bautista, who has been filing in at third base for the ailing Edwin Encarnacion. Bautista hit two home runs on the day, a three run shot in the bottom of the fifth and a two run shot in the bottom of the seventh to collect five RBI’s on the day. The three run shot by Bautista hit the casing of the third deck of the Rogers Centre, which is a feat not too often seen in the stadium. The multi home run game was the third of Bautista’s career.

Along with the great day by Bautista, Travis Snider added a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the fourth, while number nine hitter Mike McCoy had an excellent game, going three for four with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Lyle Overbay finally broke out of his drastic early season slump, reaching base on five separate occasions. Overall, Overbay was two for two on the day with a double, two walks and two runs scored.

Every batter in the Jays starting line-up reached bases on the night with the exception of catcher Jose Molina.

Once Morrow departed after his seven successful innings of work the Jays bullpen did a terrific job as Shawn Camp & Casey Janssen each pitched a scoreless inning of work to close things out.

Despite Toronto’s win and current record of 8-6 fans are still not coming to see the team play as the Jays broke their franchise low for attendance yet again last night.

The 10, 314 in attendance broke last Wednesday’s record setting mark of 10,610.

With the small-market Royals combined with the weekday night match-up to continue tonight and tomorrow in Toronto the possibility of a lower attendance mark could occur.

The Jays will continue their home stand tonight against the Royals as Dana Eveland will start for Toronto against Kyle Davies. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:07pm EST

In other Jays news starter Brian Tallet will have his next scheduled start pushed back as he is suffering from minor forearm soreness. Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston says the injury is not of a serious nature, but would like to give Tallet the necessary rest to recover.
