The Toronto Blue Jays crushed the Baltimore Orioles yesterday in Dunedin, Florida by a score of 13-3.
The Jays used a two home run performance from both Travis Snider & John Buck, as well as two run shots from Aaron Hill & Chris Lubanski to destroy the O’s.
Snider finished the game with four RBI’s, Buck with three and Hill & Lubanski both with two as the Jays dismantled Orioles starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, as well as the Orioles bullpen staff.
From a pitching standpoint Jays starter Ricky Romero turned in yet another fine performance in spring, working mainly on his breaking stuff, working five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while allowing two walks and striking out five.
Dana Eveland pitched four innings of his own, allowing his first earned run of the spring, giving up five hits, while walking two and striking out three.
Amidst another Jays spring victory, which improved their record to 8-5, the Jays returned Rule 5 draft pick selection Zech Zinicola to the Washington Nationals. In return the Nationals paid the required $25,000 return fee for Zinicola.
In order for Zinicola to remain a member of the Blue Jays via the Rule 5 he would have had to make the Jays squad out of Spring Training and remain on the roster for the entire 2010 season.
With the Jays abundance of arms in camp the chance of that happening was unlikely.
Zinicola performed well, although briefly, for the Jays in camp. He allowed one run on three hits over two and a third innings.
General Manager Alex Anthopoulos tried to work out a trade with the Nationals in order to keep Zinicola, who the Jays fancied, but the Nationals wanted him back, which is a good sign for his career going forward.
The Jays also released pitcher Casey Fien.
The Jays were the third team for Fien over the past few weeks (released by Tigers & Red Sox) as the pitcher is having a tough break landing with a team permanently.
Fien is projected as a middle reliever and with the Jays current situation was not needed as originally planned.
The Jays continue Grapefruit play today in Kissimmee against the Houston Astros at 1:05pm EST.
