The Toronto Blue Jays travelled to Lakeland, Florida to do battle once again with the Detroit Tigers, the team that defeated them in Dunedin by a score of 7-6 yesterday afternoon.

The Jays came out on top in this one 9-7, thanks to a ninth inning home run off the bat of catching prospect J.P Arencibia, who also added a third RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Today’s starting pitching matchup featured Jays lefty Marc Rzepczynski squaring off against Detroit’s prized righty Rick Porcello.

Rzepczynski turned in a decent performance over two innings of work, allowing zero runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one.

Porcello went untouched for the Tigers allowing no runs on zero hits, while striking out one across two innings of work.

The Tigers took advantage of the Jays next two pitchers Reidier Gonzalez and the highly anticipated Kyle Drabek.

Gonzalez was roughed up for four runs, three earned, on five hits, while walking one in two innings of work.

Drabek allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits and walked two batters. Some upside from the performance would be his three strikeouts.

The most impressive pitching performance of the day aside from the game’s starters could go to the Jays Zach Jackson who gained the win in the ball game.

Jackson pitched two innings allowing two hits, one of which was a solo home run to Brent Dlugach (his second in two games against the Jays) for his only earned run.

Jackson also struck out four batters in the two inning stint.

Non-roster invitee Rommie Lewis pitched the ninth inning to gain the save in the contest walking one man.

Offensively, second base prospect Brad Emaus had a 2 for 3 day scoring one run, while designated hitter Brian Dopirak also went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

However, it is quite apparent that Arencibia was the hero of this contest hopefully proving in his first spring contest that he certainly is the Jays catcher of the future.

A notable scratch from the game was Jays pitcher Brett Cecil who was scheduled to get some work in. Cecil cut himself while cooking yesterday and was forced to miss action.

The Jays travel back to Dunedin tomorrow for a 1:05pm EST contest with the National League champion Philadelphia Phillies.

It will be a reunion of sorts for teammates and former Jays ace Roy Halladay, although Halladay is not scheduled to appear in the contest.

In other minor news regarding the Jays, they have claimed pitcher Casey Fien off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

Fien has had the run around over the last week, being designated for assignment by the Tigers on Monday, than being picked up by Boston later that day, only to be claimed by the Jays three days later.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Fien the Jays moved Scott Richmond to the 60-day disabled list.
