Former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Rod Barajas has officially signed with the New York Mets.
Barajas agreed to a one-year Major League deal yesterday.
Barajas is guaranteed $500,000, with another $400,000 if he makes the Mets Opening Day roster. His contract also includes incentives that could earn him another $1 million.
What does this mean for the Blue Jays?
Yet another draft pick in the 2010 First Year Entry Draft.
With the departure of Barajas and the agreement with the Mets on a Major League deal the Jays receive a compensatory draft pick (#41) due to Barajas’ Type B player status.
The Jays now hold ten of the first 126 picks (11, 34, 38, 41, 61, 69, 80, 93, 113, 126) in next season’s draft.
Along with their yearly draft pick selections the Jays also received compensation picks for losing Marco Scutaro & Rod Barajas to free agency, as well as not signing last season’s draft picks James Paxton, Jake Eliopoulos & Jake Barrett.
That is a huge number of possible top tier draft picks for the Jays to use towards stocking their farm system.
In other Blue Jays related news former general manager and Toronto non-favorite JP Ricciardi will be joining ESPN as a television analyst this coming season.
