Gear Up For Blue Jays Baseball

Winter Meetings Day 3 Round Up

December 10th, 2009 at 8:50 am

Another exciting day at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Indianapolis, Indiana yesterday saw the Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees deal finalized, the Milwaukee Brewers agree to sign free agent starting pitcher Randy Wolf to a three year deal worth a reported $29.75 million, while also adding bullpen depth in the form of LaTroy Hawkins.

The Texas Rangers also traded ace pitcher Kevin Millwood to the Baltimore Orioles for reliever Chris Ray and cash, while also making it aware that they are interested in Canadian born free agent pitcher Rich Harden.

The day was completed when the Marlins sent the hard throwing Matt Lindstrom to the Houston Astros for right hander Robert Bono, infielder Luis Bryan and a player to be named later, while Andy Pettitte signed on with the Yankees for another season with an $11.75 million, one year deal.

The first two days of the Winter Meetings have been as active as any over the last few years and even though the Toronto Blue Jays have not officially made a deal of any kind the talks of one are heating up with a possible deal soon to come.

Yes, the name of Roy Halladay was discussed yet again yesterday with the Angels expressing serious interest in the former Cy Young Award winner.

Erick Aybar's name is featured significantly in Roy Halladay talks.

According to a Toronto Sun article the Angels offered a deal of starting pitcher Joe Saunders, shortstop Erick Aybar & minor league centre fielder Peter Bourjos in exchange for Halladay.

It’s speculated that the Jays would than turn Saunders around and ship him out to another team for more prospects while keeping Aybar and Bourjos.

This would mean yet another deal would have to be put in place involving either new acquisition Alex Gonzalez or back up shortstop John McDonald to make roster room and playing time available for Aybar at shortstop.

The Phillies who have been seriously interested in Halladay for quite some time supposedly have also put a deal on the table that would send left hander J.A. Happ and one of two outfielders Dominic Brown or Michael Taylor to the Jays in exchange for Halladay.

If the Phillies were to acquire Halladay they would have one of the best 1-2-3 combinations in all of baseball with Halladay, Cliff Lee & Cole Hamels.

The move would also offer the Phillies protection next offseason as they could sign Halladay if Lee left via free agency or vice versa.

It’s still all talk, speculation and rumors on the Roy Halladay front, but offers are coming in and eventually Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos will have to accept one of them before potential Halladay suitors are fed up with waiting and look elsewhere.

Also on the Blue Jays front news arose yesterday that free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba, who the Jays are interested in acquiring, is having difficulties working out an agreement with the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies are Torrealba’s first choice as a team as he has played for them over the last four seasons and is familiar with the squad.

With the Rockies and Yorvit Torrealba unable to reach a deal that may be good news for the Jays.

Torrealba is seeking a two year, $6 million deal similar to the deal the Washington Nationals handed to Ivan Rodriguez, while the Rockies are only willing to offer a maximum of $5 million for the two year deal.

If Torrealba bails on a Colorado deal the Jays may be the ones to snatch the free agent catcher, if they cannot first acquire Ryan Doumit from the Pittsburgh Pirates via trade.

The Jays have been linked heavily to acquiring both players to fill in as starting catcher next season until future catcher JP Arencibia is ready to step up to the Major League level.

Rumors are already flying around the Winter Meetings today as the Boston Red Sox may be involved in a trade with the Texas Rangers which includes Mike Lowell.

The Tampa Bay Rays are very interested in acquiring Atlanta Braves reliever Rafael Soriano, while the Astros are close to a deal with reliever Brandon Lyon and the Milton Bradley talks are heating up again with the Rays and now the Red Sox interested in the “off the wall” services of Bradley.

The excitement continues in Indianapolis as day four of the Winter Meetings is here as teams look to revamp their rosters or in the Jays case reshape their future.

    Hi David.

If I were a Reds fan such as yourself I would be disappointed as well. The Reds did absolutely nothing this Winter Meetings.

I do not think I heard anything from them whatsoever, even with Arroyo & Harang still on their books.

The Granderson move provided some excitement and there were a few unexpected turns such as Millwood going to the Orioles as well as some teams were under the radar (Philly really improved their all around ballclub without many people noticing signing Polanco, Gload, Schneider)

I expect more moves to occur soon as all the talk that occurred should lead to something...hopefully.

The bad part was tere was too much press hype and not enough action as a 66 year old fan and 59 years as a Red fan I was very disappointed.
