Marco Scutaro has signed a deal with the Boston Red Sox pending a physical according to reports from AOL Fanhouse, Fox Sports and a newspaper in Scutaro’s homeland Venezuela.
Scutaro, the best free agent shortstop on the market had a career year last season for the Toronto Blue Jays boasting a .282AVG with 12HR, 100 runs scored and a .379 on base percentage.
Scutaro was one of the best lead off men in all of baseball for the Jays as well as playing Gold Glove caliber defense at shortstop.
The deal is reportedly a two year deal with an option for a third.
The deal is not finalized until Scutaro passes his physical which may not come out as everyone hopes.
Scutaro suffered from plantar fasciitis in his right heel and missed most of the end of last season.
According to ESPN.com Allan Baird, a front office representative for the Boston Red Sox watched a workout by Scutaro on Tuesday in Miami with everything going well.
This may have sealed the deal for the Red Sox.
Scutaro, a Toronto fan favorite over the last two seasons since coming the Jays way in a trade with the Oakland Athletics has been mainly a utility player throughout his career, but with the shortstop position in Toronto being up in the air last season Scutaro was given his chance to shine, which he did a tremendous job of accomplishing.
If the physical is passed by Scutaro and the deal with Boston is finalized the Jays have a very good opportunity to receive two draft picks from the Red Sox to compensate for the loss of Scutaro.
The draft picks would include Boston’s first round selection as well as a sandwich pick between the first and second round.
Two weeks ago the Jays fortified the shortstop position in Toronto with the signing of former Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez as well as re-signing backup shortstop John McDonald.
This writer is sure Scutaro will pass his physical and will move onto establish a great career in Boston.
Blue Jays fans are sure to miss the aggressive Venezuelan but will surely cheer him upon his return to the Rogers Centre in Toronto albeit in the uniform of one of the Jays division rivals.
