Gear Up For Blue Jays Baseball

Millar Files for Free Agency: Toronto will not Re-Sign

It looks as if the Toronto Blue Jays and veteran first baseman/designated hitter Kevin Millar will not be working together next season.

Millar filed for free agency yesterday and Toronto has let him know they are not interested in re-signing the veteran after he had a horrible season with the Jays.

Millar, who was signed to a minor league contract last offseason, batted .223 with seven home runs and 29RBI’s in 78 games for the Jays.

At the beginning of the season Millar was in a platoon role with Lyle Overbay mainly playing when left handed pitchers were on the mound, but as the season wore on and Millar’s production dwindled so did his playing time.

Millar has now played for three of the five current American League East teams in Boston, Baltimore and Toronto.

With the departure of Millar that leaves way for the Jays to possibly re-sign surprise power man Randy Ruiz who impressed the Jays upon his call up last season in the designated hitter role, or allow for former minor league player of the year in the Chicago Cubs farm system Brian Dopirak to fill a back up role.

There are also a number of first basemen available via the free agent market this offseason. The list includes the following according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/):

Hank Blalock TEX
Russell Branyan SEA
Carlos Delgado NYM
Nomar Garciaparra OAK
Jason Giambi COL
Ross Gload FLA
Aubrey Huff DET
Nick Johnson WAS
Adam LaRoche ATL
Kevin Millar TOR
Robb Quinlan LAA
Matt Stairs PHI
Mike Sweeney SEA
Jim Thome LAD
Chad Tracy ARZ
