A deal that was in place between the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks which would have Toronto first baseman Lyle Overbay return to the team that drafted him in 1999 in exchange for Arizona catcher Chris Snyder has been put on hold.
The deal would have been the first major roster move made by new Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos.
The deal hit a snag on Sunday, but there is speculation from sources that the talks may continue in the future.
Last season, Overbay played in 132 games for the Jays hitting for an average of .265 with 16HR and 64RBI.
Overbay, a disciplined hitter draws a lot of walks and is known for his high on base percentage which reached .372 in 2009.
Overbay is in the last year of his contract and will make $7 million next season.
After Toronto acquired Overbay from the Milwaukee Brewers on December 7th 2005 he proceeded to have a career year hitting .312 with 22HR & 92RBI showcasing his power to the gaps as well as the opposite field.
Overbay’s offensive performance has tailed off since than.
Some reports have indicated that a wrist injury he suffered in June of 2007 has been the reason for the drop in offense.
With the emergence of the power hitting Randy Ruiz late in the season, as well as a large crop of first baseman on the free agent market and finally Brian Dopirak playing well in the Jays farm system, the possibility of moving Overbay has been a large one as the 2009 season closed out.
Snyder is expendable for the Diamondbacks as they are catcher heavy and with the vast improvement of Miguel Montero on their club, Snyder has been left without his starting position.

Could this be a sign that the Jays don't want Rod Barajas back?
Snyder, who signed a three year, $14.25 million extension last season with Arizona only played in 61 games in 2009 hitting .200AVG with 6HR & 22RBI.
Snyder’s best year offensively came in 2008 when he hit 16HR along with 64RBI for the Diamondbacks.
Snyder, a defensive minded catcher has only made 5 career errors across 480 career games.
The Jays are in need of a starting catcher as last season’s starter Rod Barajas is set to hit the free agent market. The catcher has not yet filed for free agency, but the move is expected.
Toronto fans will have to wait and see what occurs in regards to this down the road, but don’t be surprised if Anthopoulos continues to seek out similar deals in the future.
