John “Johnny Mac” McDonald was the big hero in yesterday’s 6-3 Toronto Blue Jays win over the visiting Minnesota Twins.
McDonald hit his first career three run home run off Twins reliever “Big Jon Rauch” in the bottom of the sixth inning to conclude a six run sixth inning, in a come from behind Blue Jays victory.
McDonald was filling in for regular second baseman Aaron Hill at second base on the evening. Hill was in Florida with his wife Elizabeth who gave birth to the couple’s first child, daughter Paige Victoria, on Monday night.
Blue Jays third baseman Edwin Encarnacion was also a factor in this game, contributing a two run single, two batters before McDonald won the game with his big three run blast.
Encarnacion was also impressive in the field. Encarnacion made a tremendous play at third in the top of the seventh inning, making a very tough backhand play, slinging the ball off balance to first to get the not slow at foot Delmon Young.
Blue Jays starting pitcher Ricky Romero settled down for his 12th win of the season after a difficult first three innings.
Romero’s earned run average sat at 4.14 after the game, putting him second among rookie starting pitchers behind Tampa Bay Rays rookie Jeff Niemann who sits at 3.67.
The Jays continue their four game home stand against the Twins tonight @ 7:07pm with Toronto ace Roy Halladay squaring off against Twins starter Carl Pavano.
In other Blue Jays news, Adam Lind shared Player of the Week honors with Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria for last week. Lind hit .321 with three homers and a major league-best 12 RBIs in eight games.
