The Toronto Blue Jays began a three game series with the Boston Red Sox in Boston at Fenway Park on Monday night.
The Jays have not won a single game while visiting Fenway Park to play Boston this season.
That changed on Monday, as the Jays used the absence of Boston ace Josh Beckett to their advantage in proving victorious over the Red Sox 10-5 in a rain shortened seven inning game.
Beckett did not start the game for Boston as he was suffering from back spasms prior to Monday’s start.
The Red Sox filled Beckett’s starter role with the young and upcoming Michael Bowden, while Toronto countered with Scott Richmond.
The Jays got to Bowden early in the game, scoring four runs off the youngster in the first inning alone.
The four run rally began with an Aaron Hill home run, his 35th of the season.
The home run was followed by a single from Adam Lind, a double from Vernon Wells, a run scoring single from Edwin Encarnacion and a bases clearing double from Lyle Overbay, all in succession.
The Jays continued their dominance over Bowden in the third as Rod Barajas crushed the first pitch he saw over the “Green Monster” in left for a three run shot.
The game would not be any different for Bowden’s replacement from the bullpen Hunter Jones.
Jones allowed four earned runs on five Toronto hits over just an inning and two thirds, as Jose Bautista went deep to left off Jones for a two run blast in the top of the fourth inning, followed by two more runs produced off Jones in top of the fifth inning.
The Red Sox tried their best to stay in the game with the home run ball contributing to their offense. Kevin Youkilis homered off Richmond in both the first and third innings and David Ortiz homered off Richmond in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The possible comeback by Boston was cut short by rain as the game was delayed for numerous hours, before finally being called in favour of the visiting Blue Jays.
Every player in the Blue Jays lineup record a hit aside from Travis Snider, with Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Lyle Overbay & Rod Barajas recording multiple hit games all through seven innings.
Although the game only lasted seven innings it was quite an exciting offensive performance on both team’s halves.
The Jays continue their series tonight in Boston at 7:10 EST as Ricky Romero pitches against Boston’s Clay Buchholz.
