The Toronto Blue Jays hosted a three game series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this past weekend at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

The Jays sent rookie left hander and California native Marc Rzepzcynski to the mound on Friday to battle Sean O’Sullivan and the Angels.

Marc Rzepczynski was stellar Friday night against the Angels.

Rzepczynski was magnificent, pitching a career high six and a third innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, while walking one and striking out six, for his first win in more than a month.

The Blue Jays offense was sparked by home runs from Aaron Hill and Vernon Wells as the Jays took this game 5-4.

The game ended in exciting fashion as Brandon League and Casey Janssen had a rough ninth inning. League allowed two hits to begin the inning and was relieved by Janssen, who surrendered a three run home run to Angels catcher Mike Napoli, bringing the score to 5-4.

Janssen would close out the game for his first save of the season snapping, the Jays five game losing streak.

The Jays would not fair as well in Saturday afternoon’s affair.

The Jays sent Canadian born starter Scott Richmond to the mound to pitch against the Angels Ervin Santana.

Richmond was solid in this game, but came away with a loss.

Richmond pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, walking three and striking out ten.

The ten strikeouts for Richmond was one shy of his career high.

Richmond received the loss when he allowed a sixth inning home run to Vladimir Guerrero, which proved to be the game winner.

The Jays did tie the game up in the third inning on a three run home run by Adam Lind, but this was as close as the Jays would get to victory in this one.

Long reliever Brian Tallet was terrible in this game, allowing three earned runs on four hits in one inning of relief in the eighth inning.

The poor outing by Tallet spelled defeat for the Jays as they lost to the Angles 7-3.

On Sunday, in the rubber match the Jays would send another California native to the mound to do battle with the Angels.

Ricky Romero also beat his home state on Sunday.

Rookie of the Year Candidate Ricky Romero was impressive pitching six strong innings, allowing eight hits, two earned runs, walking two and striking out two as the Jays offense provided all the run support he would need.

The Jays offense lit up Angels starter Trevor Bell and reliever Rafael Rodriguez for eight runs over five innings.

Travis Snider and Adam Lind both had big days. Each player had three hits in the game, one of which being a home run for Snider. His second since making his return to the Jays lineup form Triple A Las Vegas.

Also, Angels slugger Vladimir Guerrero, the free swinging machine that he is, managed to foul off a ball that bounced in the dirt before it even reached the plate in the game. This may be unusual to some, but not to Guerrero who has been known to do this in the past.

After the eight run outburst over the first five innings the Jays did not look back as they took this game easily 8-3.

The Jays walked away with a series win over a formidable competitor in that of the American League West leading Angels.

The Jays begin a three game series at home tonight, as the Tampa Bay Rays come into town looking to continue their dominance over the Jays.

The Jays will send ace Roy Halladay (who has struggled against the Rays) to the mound to battle with another Rookie of the Year candidate Jeff Niemann in the series opener.

In other Blue Jays news, third baseman Edwin Encarnacion missed the entire series after leaving Thursday’s game against Boston with a sore left knee. Encarnacion is listed as day to day.

Blue Jays closer Scott Downs, injured since August 2nd 2009 with a sore big toe on his left foot, rejoined the team and could be activated off the 15-day disabled list on Monday.

Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said he likely will ease Downs back into the closer’s role.
