Gear Up For Blue Jays Baseball

The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

The Toronto Blue Jays have seen good, bad and ugly spells in the past week.

Let me sum things up.

We’ll start with the good news.

The Good

The fans have voted, the managers have made their decisions, and the rosters have been selected for the All Star teams for the July 14th midsummer classic.

Keep in mind, that the final fan voting to pick the last selection of the American and National League teams is not complete, more on that in a minute.

Look at that, Toronto is sending more than just Roy Halladay to the All Star game this season.

Aaron Hill will make his 1st All-Star appearance July 14th in St.Louis.

Aaron Hill will make his 1st All-Star appearance July 14th in St.Louis.

Toronto is sending Halladay (10-2, 2.79ERA) and second baseman Aaron Hill (.299, 20HR, 59RBI) to the midsummer classic.

Hill is deserving of this spot, and was selected by Tampa Bay Rays coach Joe Maddon, (the coach who is in charge of this year’s American League All Star team), as an all star reserve.

Here is a list of the current All-Star team rosters (data courtesy of Foxsports.com)

Vote for Adam Lind!

Vote for Adam Lind!

I had mentioned above that the final spot on both the American League and National League rosters had not yet been decided. The fans are in charge of voting in the final player. This season’s possibilities are:

American League candidates:

Ian Kinsler, second baseman, Texas Rangers

Adam Lind, designated hitter/outfielder, Toronto Blue Jays

Chone Figgins, third baseman Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

Brandon Inge, third baseman, Detroit Tigers

Carlos Pena, first baseman, Tampa Bay Rays

National League candidates:

Mark Reynolds, third baseman, Arizona Diamondbacks

Matt Kemp, outfielder, Los Angeles Dodgers

Shane Victorino, outfielder, Philadelphia Phillies

Pablo Sandoval, third baseman/first baseman, San Francisco Giants

Cristian Guzman, shortstop, Washington Nationals

Adam Lind could make it three Blue Jays All-Stars this season, and he is very deserving.

Lind’s current numbers are .310AVG, 18HR, 57RBI.

You can vote for Adam Lind by visiting the main page of the Toronto Blue Jays official website @ http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com

The deadline for voting is this Thursday July 9th @ 4:00pm eastern time.

Note: You can vote as many times as your heart desires.

The Bad

The Jays starting rotation took another hit this past weekend.

Scott Richmond was placed on the 15 day disabled list this past Saturday, with inflammation in his right bicep tendon.

Richmond had been pitching through the pain, but finally informed Blue Jays staff of the soreness this past weekend.

Rookie Brad Mills, who pitched terribly in his first call up to the big leagues (0-1, 14.09ERA, 7.2IP in 2 games started) gets the call up to take Richmond’s spot in the rotation.

The Ugly

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost three straight games against their division rival New York Yankees, and have dropped seven of their last eight games.

Most importantly five of those eight games have been against division rivals (two losses to Tampa Bay added to the three against the Yankees).

The Jays have plummeted into fourth place in the American League East, and currently only sit one game above .500.

This portion of the Jays schedule is a make or break point for the 2009 Blue Jays squad, as far as staying in the playoff race goes.

This writer and the fans of Toronto have witnessed the Jays break horribly.

Let’s see if the Jays can turn it around today (1:05pm start time), with one win in New York, before we travel to Tampa than Baltimore to do battle with the Rays & Orioles, before the All-Star break hits.
