Gear Up For Blue Jays Baseball

“The Future”: Third Edition:The 2009 MLB Draft: Supplmental First Round

In my previous article I stated that in the first round with the twentieth overall selection the Toronto Blue Jays would take prized Indiana Hoosiers righty Eric Arnett.

Now it’s time for my prediction that the Jays will make with the thirty seventh overall selection (keep in mind that this is the supplemental round where teams who lost free agents to other teams get compensation, this round is a sandwich round between the first and second rounds).

The Jays loaded up with position players in last year’s draft, and I’m positive the Jays want to grab as many pitching prospects as possible this year. As I stated in an earlier article, the Jays don’t like to take risks on high risk, high reward pitchers out of high school, much rather going with collegiate bred players with more maturity, and experience.

That gameplan has worked in the past, with the Jays drafting pitchers the likes of Brett Cecil, Ricky Romero, Casey Janssen, Shaun Marcum, and our current pitching staff ace Roy Halladay.

Will Kennesaw State's Chad Jenkins make it to the Jays at pick number 37? The Jays certainly hope so.

Will Kennesaw State's Chad Jenkins make it to the Jays at pick number 37? The Jays certainly hope so.

This is why my prediction for the Jays supplemental first round selection is:

Chad Jenkins – Kennesaw State – 6′4, 225LBS, Right Handed Pitcher

Jenkins, the Atlantic Sun Conference’s Pitcher of the Year, earned unanimous First Team All-Conference honors in the month of May, 2009. His 8-1 record was tops in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while his ERA of 2.54 also led the league. Jenkins finished the season with five complete games and three shutouts (two solo and one combined). Jenkins, a Canton, Georgia native, had a scoreless innings streak during the season that reached 41.0 innings, while he also went 24.2 consecutive innings without issuing a walk. Jenkins only loss came after allowing two earned runs in six innings against No. 3 ranked Georgia Tech. In addition, Jenkins also excelled in the classroom, earning CoSIDA Second Team District All-Academic honors.

Not only is Chad Jenkins a keeper on the baseball field, but he’s got the academic smarts as well. Baseball executives are always high on intelligent collegiate players, as intelligence is highly underrated when it comes to the game of baseball, but is quite the necessity.

Chad Jenkins has turned some heads and may go in the first round before the Jays can get to him with pick number thirty seven in the supplemental first round, but I personally think he’ll slip under the radar due to his small collegiate background.

Let’s hope for the Jays sake that he sneaks past everyone, and falls to number thirty seven, because if my first two pick predictions are correct that means two very talented right handed pitchers will be coming the Jays way, and as all true baseball fans know good pitching is the key to winning baseball.

I don’t plan on analyzing any rounds past the first round and supplemental first round because there are literally thousands of baseball prospects, and for me to research and analyze them all I would have to give up my life.

I’ll be back after the 2009 MLB Draft is complete and analyze the Jays choices.
